How to Word Your Wedding Accessories

Your venue is booked, your invitations have been stuffed and mailed, and now you’re left planning out all of the smaller details of the big day. How do you want your guests to arrive to the venue? Should you provide them a breakdown of the whole day, or maybe just the ceremony, or both? Each detail matters when it comes to creating the perfect experience you want each and every one of them to have.

Read on to learn more information about what accessories are available, which ones would be helpful to you on your special day, and then how to word them properly and effectively.

What Are Wedding Stationery Accessories?

Accessories are other pieces of stationery that are essential to your ceremony and reception – really anything needed after your invitations have been sent out. Here is a list of some essentials we recommend including on your special day:

Along with all the accessory options, there are different ways, creative ways, to word or utilize each stationery option. Please see our wording examples below.

A Guide To Wedding Accessory Wording

There are many different ways to word anything and everything, which can be very hard to navigate and figure out the right way. You can research various websites, read books, and ask for advice, but at the end of the day it all really boils down to your wedding needs. What traditions are in place for your ceremony? Do you and your partner share the same faith? Do your families? Every couple is unique and requires a little something different from the “norm” – especially in a world where we need to blend tradition and modern language.

Here are some day-of accessory ideas you can include at your ceremony and reception:

How to Word Welcome Signs

Use a large-scale sign to welcome your guests, as they enter your ceremony. Typically welcome signs include your names, the location, the date, and sometimes a cute line or two about how love will last forever.

Deluxe Booklet Programs

Deluxe booklet programs are also available in a 4 x 10” size and a 5 x 8” size. The deluxe booklet is great for ceremonies that have a lot of information to include, such as, breaking down and explaining all the different parts of a Jewish wedding.

  • Aufruf Aufruf is a Yiddish word, meaning “calling up.” At the Shabbat morning service on the day before our wedding, we are called up to the Torah to be honored. While the wedding is a personal ceremony, a Jewish marriage is also considered a public event to be shared with the greater community, and all of our wedding guests are invited to join this online Shabbat service.
  • Ketubah The ketubah is a Jewish marriage contract written in Aramaic. Aramaic was the Jewish vernacular during the era of the Talmud, our source for many Jewish wedding traditions we are incorporating. The ketubah outlines the groom’s legal responsibilities to the bride within their marriage. Before the wedding, the ketubah is signed by two non-relatives as witnesses to the ceremony.
  • Badeken Badeken is a Yiddish word, meaning “covering”. During the badeken, groom lowers the veil onto bride, confirming her identity as the person he wants to marry. The badeken is one of several wedding customs where one partner wraps the other as an expression of care and endearment.
  • Procession Sister of the Groom Groom, escorted by his parents Ilana and Joshua Bride, escorted by her parents Rosemary and Michael
  • Circling Before the ceremony begins, bride walks around groom seven times. In encircling groom, bride surrounds and wraps him to affirm that he is the person she wants to marry. This custom expresses a parallel sentiment to the badeken. Huppah The huppah is where we stand while the wedding ceremony takes place. It is portable, held up by four poles, covered on top by a canopy, and open on all four sides.
  • Huppah The huppah officially becomes our first home as a married couple, and these structural details symbolically evoke the adaptability, resilience, permanence, and openness that we hope will define our marriage and future home.
  • Kiddushin and Exchange of Rings Kiddushin is a word that can be defined as “exclusivity”. Through the ceremony of kiddushin, we exchange rings in order to designate ourselves and one another as exclusive partners. Rings are symbolic objects of value, representing our commitment to provide for and support one another. Earlier in Jewish history, other objects of value, including figs, were used instead of rings. In order for this to work, bride would need to refrain from eating the fig until after the ceremony, so we are using rings to be safe.
  • We recite traditional Hebrew statements that effect our change in status as husband and wife. Groom says to bride, in Hebrew, “you are made holy to me according to the laws of Moses and Israel.” Bride says to groom, “ani l’dodi v’dodi li,” which means, “I am for my love, and my love is for me.”
  • This portion of the ceremony concludes with the public reading of the ketubah, our marriage contract.
  • Sheva Brachot The sheva brachot, or seven blessings, are recited in order to finalize the Jewish marriage ceremony. These blessings include a benediction over a cup of wine that we both drink from, a celebration of the miracle of creation, and wishes of goodwill for the bride and groom in their future together. These blessings under the huppah simulate the joys and rituals of family life in our Jewish home.
  • Breaking the Glass Groom steps on and breaks a glass, symbolizing the still shattered world we return to when we leave the support and safety of our huppah. The breaking of the glass reminds us that even in our special moment of joy and celebration, every silver lining has a touch of grey.

How to Incorporate Table Numbers

These are essential to any reception, in our book! Table numbers help highlight each table and make it very easy for your guests to locate their seat. Typically used in traditional number format, you can also get creative and create table numbers based on locations (i.e. all the locations you and your partner have visited: Maui, Saint Thomas, Aruba, etc.)

Using a favor tag is a great way to write a small thank you or something cute for your guests to enjoy with their favor.

How to Incorporate Custom Signs

Custom signs are great for specialty drink lists, your gifts table, a wedding timeline, and more. For anything else you need a sign for – you can never have too many – a custom sign gives you all the freedom to be creative and informative to your guests.
